One of the best things about grilling is playing with fire. The fine folks over at GrillEasy seem to agree with this and have come up with an innovative portable fire in a box. A few weeks ago they asked if I would be willing to give their cool looking FireQube a trial and share my thoughts. I figured it was one more excuse to play with fire so I told them to send it on down! Bottom line: The FireQube works GREAT and was a lot of fun!
So what the heck is a FireQube and why would you want to have one? A FireQube is a single load of lump charcoal that is easy to transport and easy to light. The FireQube is not designed for your routine grilling in your backyard. Instead the FireQube is designed for folks that are going to a tailgate/picnic/beach/park and want to do some grilling. If you have a FireQube you do not have to haul around a large bag of charcoal and a starter chimney.
I tried the FireQube in my Weber Jumbo Joe and it worked exactly as advertised. It was extremely easy to light and I had hot coals in just about 15 minutes. The FireQube does make a LOT of smoke during the first few minutes.
I almost always use Kingsford briquettes when I grill and am not used to hardwood lump. I was amazed at how incredibly hot the charcoal was burning! It was so hot that I had a very hard time taking pictures! One thing I noticed was that a few pieces of charcoal did fall through the grate and bottom vent and landed in the catch pan. This isn’t a big deal as long as your catch pan is in place but is something you should be aware of.
The chops got brushed with a little barbecue sauce and turned out pretty dang nice!
I then moved the wings directly over the coals and grilled them for another 20 minutes. I moved the wings around about every five minutes or so to make sure they were all getting crisp and nothing was burning. The smell of the smoke was simply amazing.
All told I got about an hour of highly satisfying grilling out of the FireQube. I probably could have grilled another small batch of food with the coals I had remaining but sadly I had to shut the grill down and get busy on some chores.
Here is where part of the beauty of the FireQube came into action. When I was done grilling I had to put away…….nothing. Again, not a big deal if you are in your backyard but an amazing convenience if you are tailgaiting!
